DC Thomson Media is creating a Live News Team to produce content telling our readers in the north and north-east of Scotland what they need to know and what they want to know.
The beating heart of our newsroom, this team will create digital-first content making use of multimedia tools including images, video and graphics for our Press and Journal and Evening Express brands. This team will have a handle on breaking news events, developing local, national and international stories and trending news across social platforms.
We want a brilliant senior journalist who thrives working in a fast-paced environment to lead a team of 10 live news journalists split across our geographies. This individual will be part of our senior editorial team and at the centre of everything breaking in our areas.
They should have the ability to spot the important stories and react quickly to ensure breaking news stories are produced for our websites, helping to maintain our brands’ reputations for producing quick, reliable and trusted news of major events better than anyone else in our patches.
The successful candidate should be target-driven, highly skilled in social media and have a comprehensive understanding of newsroom metrics.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a team of reporters across multiple areas to ensure digitally optimised live news content is produced for our news brands
- Overseeing the management of the homepages of two of the leading news sites in the region
- Making use of modern online tools to enhance the reach of the team’s content
- Monitoring trends and metrics to capitalise on audience opportunities
- Being part of future recruitment of digital staff
- Ensuring the team utilises the best multimedia techniques available to enhance content
- Looking after team members’ overall, and individual, development needs
The successful candidate must:
- Be a senior journalist, preferably with pre-existing leadership experience
- Have highly-developed digital storytelling skills and the ability to use modern online tools and data to accomplish that goal
- Have a vision of how to use cutting-edge storytelling techniques
- Be collaborative and open to working with multiple different teams to achieve the end goal
- Be able to inspire and develop a large and experienced team which is spread across different locations
