About you: With an anticipated start date of February 2021, the ideal individual for this role will have a track record of overseeing high-quality journalism and delivering exclusive stories. With Strong experience of news editing and taking the decisions required to ensure the needs of a title’s audience are met. Therefore, knowledge of the public sector and local government would be highly advantageous.

About the role: This role is acting news editor on a fixed-term maternity-cover contract. You will line-manage one reporter and be a key figure in LGC‘s editorial team which also features an editor and features editor. LGCplus.com and LGC magazine are the leading information sources for decision makers in town, city, and county halls nationwide. Our stories, including our disclosure of the size of the financial shortfall local government faces as a result of covid-19 and our revelation of how the government’s Towns Fund is being disproportionately awarded to marginal constituencies, are frequently picked up by the national press and quoted in parliamentary debates or reports.  

Key accountabilities:

  • Prioritising to ensure that LGC’s news team is meeting the needs of our audience
  • Working with the editor and other team members to provide content and hit deadlines for LGC’s monthly magazine
  • Developing and maintaining high level contacts within the sector
  • Attending some events in London and around the UK where appropriate
